Dear Angie – To C.H.

So I almost cried, Angie –

Seeing that big pigeon’s egg on your finger –
“Oh they are so beautiful – I’m blind!”
Its sparkles and fire
tingled my eyes, digging two wells
and filling them with sea water.
Congratulations, my dear Angie –

I’m sure, I’m so sure,
that you will be happy, and you’ll make him happy –
The burly young guy next to you,
with those proud shoulders
and shoulder marks, he smiles like a baby, Angie –
Oh you got so tanned! Was it the Florida sunshine? and,
Is that an American pit bull? Isn’t he sweet?

I’m sure he is, and must have loved you so dearly –
He would never be mean to you,
and would entrust you with the leash
around his neck, in your hands, which
are so ornate already –
It’s not just a piece of jewelry,
but something to keep eternally –
Oh I’m so corny!

But it’s Okay to be corny,
for this one time, really,
’cause I wanted to be
Cool about it – ’cause I normally need no pity –
but there’s no need to hide in front of you,
Angie, now so tanned and glowing
like the sun itself, I mean, I could melt like an ice cube
into your smile, and I’m sure he –

Does it too. Now you are family, from
one to two, and two to many, my old friend,
I’m not antsy. It’s a lifelong business,
and time you still have plenty –
Do make it the best of all memory –
forgive me, my poetry was lousy,
but it is for you, Angie.
